Re: question about 3rd album songs

Well, they recorded a version Beginning to See the Light with Cale of course. And Pale Blue Eyes and What Goes On have both been anecdotally mentioned as being played with Cale in the summer of '68. And if - if - this listing from the NYPL Lou archive is accurate, they recorded most of the others w...

Re: VU article in new issue of Ugly Things

I've ordered it from RT, UK since that post above. But the initial description (something like 'how the VU got their name') was not enough incentive for me to part with whjat seemed like a lot of cash to order from the states. Thanks to 'i am the table' and Phil for since giving us a little more to ...

Re: VU article in new issue of Ugly Things

I'm stunned that anyone here imagined that either Phil or Ugly Things magazine would have wasted time reprinting an anecdote that we've all heard for thirty + years. Given that the well-known anecdote would take all of 3 lines to repeat, I think people here assumed there was probably more to it tha...

Re: VU article in new issue of Ugly Things

(Clears throat) The 12 page article is actually about the paperback books that provided the group their name. The research is fascinating and reveals (among other things) that the original author was on federal trial for his reportage. Great contemporaneous visuals too. If that endorsement's insuff...

Re: The Downtown Pop Underground (book)

Threadjack! Well, maybe not. Sky Arts channel in UK will be broadcasting "Barbara Rubin and the Exploding New York Underground" by Chuck Smith on 14th Dec 2020 at 13:45. It's not something I've heard of but thought it might tie in to this thread. A friend watched it last week. I'm was hoping to cat...

Re: The Downtown Pop Underground (book)

name names and I will look. or a date. it goes into the 70s for sure. The scene around the New York Dolls 70-75. Names might include Pure Hell, Teenage Lust, Harlots of 42nd Street. I'm always on the look out for more info on proto punk scenes and any recordings from that period. Boston, Cleveland,...

Re: The Downtown Pop Underground (book)

Update. Just so you know - there are about 3 pages that cover the early days of the VU, up to when Mo Tucker joined. No photos and nothing a well-read VU fan would not know.

The Downtown Pop Underground (book)

Just picked this up from Judd books in Marchmont Street, London. The first two chapters should be of interest to any VU historian – not for their coverage of the VU but for the setting of the NY underground arts scene from late 50s and through the 60s and in later chapters, beyond. https://i.ibb.co/...
