Re: Cassettes in the UK 89-93

I've finally documented my tapes and set up a simple Wordpress website. Take a look if you wish https://redsleevetapes.wordpress.com I haven't finished cross-referencing the tapes to their Afterhours equivalents nor each track to any instances on LPs or CDs, but you are welcome to the site as it sta...

Re: Elliott Murphy's 'Night Lights'

Elliott Murphy is apparently 70 and living in Paris, according to The Quietus https://thequietus.com/articles/28058-1 ... pes-review. Actually he is only mentioned in passing, the rest of the article extols the virtues of 1969 Live.

Re: More scanned articles

Yup, I found some more old stuff so I've made some clumsy scans and put them on my fileshare. The new file is called Phase16_Cale_Zen and contains a press release for What's Welsh for Zen? plus some reviews from the UK press. You'll need to download the pdf and adjust the print size to suit your eye...

Gibbs was in Boston 4-5 years before Cale
Indeed he was. I ask because Gibbs appears in the student list just below Cale.

Re: VU Photo Thread

I think this is pretty special. Cale enrolled at Tangelwood, one of just 40 overseas students July 1963 Does anyone know if Cale actually attended the summer school? He played in the performance of Satie's Vexations later that year, but I'm just wondering if he encountered Michael Gibbs in his comp...

Re: Pleasure Then

Maybe this is a threadjack, but does anyone else think that the bleakness of Nico's lyrics (here and elsewhere) stem from "The Last Mile"?

all 3 session list as personnel: Nico, vocals; and others
my note: unfortunately no further details
Could that vocal have been dubbed on afterwards? Nico famously hated the flute that was added to Chelseas Girls.

From the booklet "VU & Nico - 45th Anniversary Edition":

The rumbling and squawking guitars are distinctly Velvetian, providing the sole backing for Nico's vocals.
Surely Cale's viola lends its voice to the drone ... does anyone else hear it? But that's a good find mangue.

Re: The Velvet Underground Jokes thread

When Nico parted company with the Velvets, the boys assumed all the vocals. John sang with a sonorous tenor, but Lou's voice was reedy.

Re: Pleasure Then

I don't think the weaving voice is actually falsetto, more likely a soprano vocalisation (and the way it rises and falls reminds me of Allegri's "Miserere me, Deus" although the two pieces are worlds apart). All that technical information about voice types in the link has given rise to a truly awful...
