Guess I'm Falling in Love with vocals!

Post by Mark » 17 May 2016 14:14

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned on here - or if it has I've missed it:

Someone has taken the Another View version of Guess I'm Falling in Love and flown in the vocal from the Gymnasium live recording. It sounds much, much better than you might expect. Incredible, really!

Two thoughts:

1) I wonder if the guy who did it can be persuaded to replace the backing track with the recent mix from the Super Deluxe WL/WH?

2) Would the same thing be possible with Move Right In...?

Brilliant. I've occasionally wondered whether this was possible. I'd like a full CD quality file. Thanks for posting

Having listened again, I realise now that he's actually overlaid the entirety of the live version on to the studio track, rather than any attempt to strip out the vocal. It sounds cool but I wonder if the latter would be possible?

I'd say not impossible, but wouldn't sound as good as this hybrid mix of GIFIL - because the studio instrumental version of Move Right In is pretty clean and all the known live versions are much noisier with none of them having especially clear vocals.

That said - I might have a crack just to see what it sounds like

True. I have to admit I find the studio Move Right In boring as hell, so anything that livens it up...

I noticed that. It's a weird hybrid sound. There is meant to be software that isolates voices but I've never heard how good it is.

I wondered whether the voice could be helped a bit more with some filtering and/or eq-ing?

I had a go at Move Right In and it sounded terrible and was almost impossible to match the tempo as they speed up quite a lot on the live versions - and the live vocals are almost inaudible and won't isolate as it's all pretty much mono

So in the face of adversity I had a crack at laying the vocals from the acetate version of Ride Into The Sun on to the wonderful VU instrumental version

Not perfect but sounds like the version you always wish they'd done. The Acetate version is pretty poor quality and musically is not a patch on the VU take

I think the slightly-out-of-synch (at times) nature of it fits with well that bleed-thru and distortion of the Wl/WH sessions, and I've used it for a playlist of an "alternate" Velvet Underground 2nd album:

Side 1
1 - White Light / White Heat
2 - Lady Godiva's operation
3 - Guess I'm falling in love (This new hybrid mix, of course..)
4 - Here she comes now
5 - I heard her call my name (the "balanced" mix, from 40th anniversary WL/WH)

Side 2
1 There is no reason (Demo, from 'Peel Slowly & See')
2 Sister Ray

It works pretty well :)
