Can we assume the ashtray pre-dates the design? Whichever, I would guess Warhol would have used a repro from a newspaper.
What the article does not mention is that the original idea for the cover was to use a plastic surgery photograph – a nose-job.

I was reading a book ( http://www.50jaarvelvetunderground.nl/ ) in witch got mencioned that Andy did buy a box full with stickers, including banana stickers. Before the album got released.
The book i read is in dutch, but refered to "Ik Jan Cremer 3" in witch it got mentioned for the firsth time.
Don't know if it got translated into English.
