Off The Record: An Oral History of Popular Music is the title of a 1988 book of excerpts of a series of candid interviews conducted by Joe Smith, former president of Warner Brothers Records, with several dozen major performers, Lou Reed among them, and other leading music-industry figures.
A few years ago Smith donated his interview tapes to the Library of Congress, which has been gradually posting them online. The full audio of Smith's 64-minute interview with Reed is available at https://www.loc.gov/item/jsmith000151/.
