Venus in Furs - Mono West Coast pressing - volume change?

Post by hkmartin » 14 Apr 2021 02:46

A while ago, I tracked down an original Mono VUAN West Coast pressing. The jacket was trashed, but the record was in pretty good shape, so I got a reasonable deal. I was listening to it today, and I noticed that during the "servant" in the first verse of Venus in Furs, it suddenly gets a LOT louder. I'm not talking about something subtle - at first I'd thought my amp glitched. I have an East Coast Mono pressing, and that does not have this anomaly. Is this something that's well known?

The only mention I could find of something like this was on the Steve Hoffman forums.
... it seems the volume changes during the song, as if the master fader was being toyed with.

i'm sure this has been discussed, no? i don't think it's exclusive to the west coast mono... there's an audible edit in Run Run Run which is more obvious on the mono versions too.

You're right. Was discussed 10 years ago!

It's dramatic - I wouldn't say it gets quite twice as loud, but easily 1 1/2 as loud. Impossible to miss.
And it's not there on my East Coast pressing. They are both mono "torsos".

I have an East Coast mono "big black sticker" pressing and it's not audible on my copy
