Two new double LP boots of ‘1966’ and ‘Gymnasium’

Post by iaredatsun » 06 Dec 2021 06:22

ValleyDale and Gymnasium get new double LP releases. Lord to 300. Nice artwork. Various (probably unfounded) claims about using new sources of tapes. Live 66 improvs are only 23 mins, so claim that they are unedited seems uncredible. They use the ‘VUAS’ label for these releases.

Is it even possible that the original VUAS is behind these?

Nice artwork:

Certainly not the original one.

It looks like a company was actually set up four months ago with MC Kostek as head

they have the SE Laguna Ave address on the sleeves too - seems odd, to say the least! Unless they have some strange state copyright laws in Florida, it sounds totally illegal.

I would like the full Gymnasium show on vinyl, but the 'first performance of Sister Ray' thing is irritating, and the source tape claims seem to be groundless.

there's also a 3rd LP closet mix boot on the VUAS label, wtf?

Closet mix is already OOP seemingly. Wanted a copy.

Just ordered both of these. I have been on the look out for the Gymnasium Lp for some years now (on vinyl) and was willing to even buy an incomplete version (using WLWH box set as a reference) but will be happy.... what's the overall feeling about these two? How is the sound quality?

My sealed copy of Gymnasium arrived from a US seller on Discogs. It has some unpleasant looking scratches, obviously made during manufacturing, on one side. But luckily they did not sound at all. I have not done any kind of comparison with my other versions of this recording but it sounded good. I enjoyed it a lot.

There’s some volume fluctuations at the start and i know one other version has that - i think the UMG release. But I cannot remember whether that defect was also on the first bootleg LP i bought. I’ll have to revisit it.

My order of the 1966 LP is stuck in limbo waiting for the seller to sort out the new VAT regulation that affects sales to the UK.

The volume fluctuations are not on the bootleg which in addition to making it superior in my ears also makes me wonder what happened. Was the taped damaged after bootlegers used it and before universal got it or are there two different copies of the tape?

I just got the other boot (1966) yesterday. It sounds like how I remember that recording sounds so it's probably also sourced from the official super deluxe version. Quite overpriced but happy to have it on vinyl and the pressing is fine. Cover is better than you're average bootleg. I got mine from Juno (uk) and it's still available btw:
