missing members

Post by Sheila Klein » 15 Mar 2023 03:00

According to my notes Sterling Morrison and Doug Yule are the only VU members for whom there's no documentation of having missed gigs during their respective membership periods.

Angus MacLise: 56 Ludlow recording (July '65)
John Cale: Dom (NYC, Apr. '66; Henry Flynt substituted for a show or two)
Lou Reed: Poor Richard's (Chicago, summer '66)
Moe Tucker: Paramount Theater (Springfield Mass., Apr. 17 '70)

Interesting.

Moe of course missed the Loaded recording sessions as well. That means the original releases of the four studio albums all featured different lineups - with Nico, without Nico, Yule instead of Cale and stand-ins for Moe.

So when we talk about "The Velvet Underground", who do we really mean?

And, brushed away under the carpet, Squeeze makes five.

According to Yule (if memory serves) when he saw the VU live in Cambridge Feb 24, 1968 John Cale did not attend that show. Confirmed by Richman in Ugly Things #56

And Moe missed the Max’s residency as well. And if you want to get REALLY technical, Lou missed the remaining dates of that residency after he quit :-)

technically I think Moe missed more than just the Paramount Theater show - she was not at the mid-May show at the Second Fret or the May/June gig at the Unicorn in Boston either. (I take that back - there are pics of a pregnant Moe at the Unicorn in 1970. Maybe she just missed some of the shows there)
