VU 1967.Aug in Kingston [CAN]?

Post by mangue » 25 Mar 2023 13:58

Just came across this add:

Image
1967 August 17, The Kingston Whig-Standard [Ontario, CAN], page 2
https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/730 ... derground"

"Join the Fun at the Lake Ontario Park
Dance Friday August 18 to "The Velvet Underground"
8:45pm to 11:15pm - admission 75c per person - $1.00 per couple"

Anybody seen this before and has any clue if connected to "our" VU?
PS: date is "free" according Olivier's website and location reasonably reachable from NY

Very cool and interesting. I think the only confirmed date the original band ever played outside of the US was the EPI in Canada, so this would be an interesting addition to that. Also, this was the White Light/White Heat era, so seeing that at a park in Canada one evening would have been something!

I searched in Canadian papers a newspapers.com, for 1967 found only above result for "Velvet Underground".
Local archives in Ontario might clarify more about "Dance to "The Velvet Underground""...

No, on 1968.Jun.27-30 they played at the Retinal Circus in Vancouver. [WLWH tour!]
And after Cale was booted on 1968.Oct.31-Nov.03 at same venue and 1969.Jun.21* at the 'Toronto Pop Festival 69' in the Varsity Stadium in Toronto.
Later on the "Velveteen Underground" played in 1971.September several dates in Vancouver and Edmonton.

*a review of the 'Toronto Pop Festival 69' in the Montreal Gazette of 1969.Jun.28, mentions as one of the disappointments:
"Velvet Underground, whose albums have included some of electric rock's most original music and lyrics, failed to move any of their black-magical music past the footlights, leaving only the memory of their records to fill the gap."

How many other documented Velvet Underground bands are there? I know of the Australian combo but that's all.
