Top Pop October 1971 - tape found! (Sort of)
Top Pop October 1971 - tape found! (Sort of)
I recently got into an exchange on Facebook with a guy who has a reel to reel tape of the VU playing Cool It Down on the Top Pop Dutch TV show in October 1971 - however he has no way of playing it back or digitising it. I don't think this recording has ever surfaced in any form - do we have anyone on the forum who's in Holland that could help? (Whatever happened to Arjan?)

I live in the Netherlands.

Do you happen to have access to a reel to reel tape machine?

No, sorry. But in 1971 they only did play back in that show.

Thanks, that probably makes the tape a bit less interesting then!

Nice to know that Concertgebouw broadcast is still out there.
The guy on Facebook has replied and says that he's listened to the tape and it does sound live to his ears. And the photo of the band from the show does look like they're set up to play live, with mics on the amps and everything plugged in:
As it turns out he does have a machine to play it on, I'll see if I can steer him towards getting it digitised...

I live in The Netherlands, but unfortunately am not able to play [let even digitize] reel-to-reel tapes.
In the past I have contacted the people behind the Youtube account of Top Pop, and they stated that they don't have any recordings by The Velvet Underground in their archive.
Furthermore to my knowledge they played [only?] Rock 'n' Roll in the Top Pop show.
I searched the Dutch public media archive [beeldengeluid.nl] with following results:
--season: Muziekopnamen Zendgemachtigden (1971)
PROGRAMMA VELVET UNDERGROUND (GEGEVEN TITEL)
Recording Location: Amsterdam Concertgebouw
Recording Information: Date 19-Nov-1971
link: https://zoeken.beeldengeluid.nl/program ... 0128552831
Seems together with recordings by LOUDON WAINWRIGHT
--season: Handelsplaten Reeks 9 - AMSTERDAM 1971
Seems a copy of the bootleg LP of the 1971 concert in Amsterdam

Well, here it is!
The Velvet Underground - Cool It Down live on TopPop (AVRO, Netherlands), October 12th 1971:
LINK
Recorded by Ron de Bruijn on a Grundig TK141 reel-to-reel, via a direct line feed from the TV.
Ron also had tickets to see the VU play at the Turfschip in Breda on Oct 27th, only to find that the gig was cancelled - one of several Dutch tour dates that fell through that month. He was there at the venue with his tape recorder, and taped the announcement saying the gig wasn't going ahead.
Anyway, enjoy, and thank you Ron!
