NOTES

Recorded by Jeff Leegood on a portable Wollensak reel-to-reel tape recorder. Leegood was later contacted by Guido Piccinetti which led to the release by Aulica, sourced from a DAT copy of the original masters. The tracks on the 1969 Live album were taken from a copy given to manager Steve Sesnick by Leegood. (Those copies are now evidently part of the New York Public Libary's Lou Reed archive.) "I wasn't patched into any soundboard, I just had one mic on Lou's mic stand, one mic on the floor."

"Sister Ray" has been said to come from the previous day's set but the microphone setup suggests that it belongs to this set as found on the gray market Aulica relese, instead of the 13 min. version which fades out and shares the same characteristics as the October 18 set found on The First Night bootleg disc.

The stereo balance of the original recording (drums and Lou's vocals tilted to the side) bothered me, so I have attempted to fix that as well as the tape speed, and have also edited in the longer spoken bits from the Ride into the Sun EP.

I was the one who originally alerted Guido to the existence of these fine recordings - we were in NY together and I played him a cassette compilation of the unreleased material and the "1969 acetate". Anyone who knew Guido can imagine his reaction....

I guess this is fairly representative as a sample: Some Kinda Love (VBR mp3)

I should explain that I initially attempted to remix the show with stem separation software but wasn't ultimately satisfied with the result (granted that it was done with the previous generation of demix AI) and went with a more traditional approach. Maybe one day I'll try again with the latest demix software, but it doesn't really cry out for that... even if that kind de/re-mixing seems to have worked out well for something like Led Zeppelin's Texas Pop 1969 (where the stereo balance of the original SBD tape is more objectionable).

Basically I'd just rather have a more cohesive/centered mix without it being mono, instead of replicating the original mic setup (fascinating piece of audio verite though it is: "have tape, will time travel"), hence this. Although ideally, the guitars would be stereo split in a mix (maybe not hard but slightly narrowed) and the rest of the instrumentation in the center, except for ambient room reverb.

Of course, opinions may vary and this version is for my own listening but shared in case others find it useful. I hope I managed to include all the extra bits of tape available but not found on the Aulica disc.
