Wow. Thanks Simon
According to a web site this was recorded May 31-68 at the Shrine Auditorium .. 6 days after the VU played there. Curious.

By the way Simon you have scored +400 posts ... go and claim your own title!!

4 or 5 years ago I almost bought a vinyl bootleg of the Yardbirds with "Waiting for the man" on it...
I remember it clearly, got it on my hands, but didn't buy
Shame on me...

Mm. Is it my imagination or does it sound very like Bowie's radio versions of 'Waiting..' during the Ziggy era? Didn't he once say of Mick Ronson 'I've found my Jeff Beck!'. Coincidence?

I say this as this is the 1st time I've ever heard this and I've known of this version for years long after hearing the Bowie BBC versions.
"If anyone had a heart
They wouldn't turn around & break it
And if anyone played a part
They wouldn't turn around & fake it"
Lou Reed, 'Sweet Jane', 1970

I agree with JimJim - it sounds very like the Bowie/Spiders cover from 1972 (eg the Oct 72 Santa Monica show)

also: the VU played on the same bill as an earlier incarnation of the Yardbirds in late '66 - they could have picked it up then.

I've had that Yardbirds box set for years. Atrocious sounding in spots, but much loved. It has a beautiful photo on the cover from the actual gig, The Yardbirds in full psychedelic glory, Page playing the tripped out Tele that he used for a while in Led Zep.
They play "Waiting" as part of a medley along with some other songs that they typically encored with, sort of a frenetic jam. It's fantastic. Page was known to be a fan of the 1st VU album and of course knew and worked with Nico prior to her involvement with the VU.

The original Youtube video at the start of this thread has been removed, but Dangerous Minds have done an article on this cover version which includes a new Youtube video (albeit with the bootleg audio sync'ed to a different Yardbirds performance)

Seems so much less cool with them prancing around like The Shadows in white lounge suits
