I seem to remember an argument that they were in Chicago in mid 1968 and that the set list may have been from then. Will do some searching and find out why I think that.Wick Pick wrote: ↑24 Mar 2019 20:15It's possible though I'm not aware of it. It's definitely a Cale ere setlist, it's in his hand, and it is written on paper from the restaurant down the street from Poor Richard's. There is also a Morrison interview where he confirms that 'Searching' was born as an instrumental during the Poor Richard's stand.
John Cale recorded five '3rd' album songs with VU?

Much of July was on the West Coast. Played at Boston on 15-17 August.lurid wrote: ↑25 Mar 2019 01:36I seem to remember an argument that they were in Chicago in mid 1968 and that the set list may have been from then. The Chicago setlist in question is this one. No record of them playing there in 68.
And we now know that Pale Blue Eyes dates from '65, with Reed and Cale playing it on one of the Reed Archive demo tapes.

One interesting fact is that they were playing in San Diego the time of the July '68 recording identified in the archive. 4-6th July at the Hippodrome.
Could they have recorded the tape at TTG in LA?

Yes I take it back - no idea where I got the notion of 1968 from. Also Foggy Notion in 1966?
Re: John Cale recorded five '3rd' album songs with VU?
Also, That’s The Story Of My Life is a ‘factory’ song, using one of Billy Names sayings, so makes sense if it is from ‘66.

One other thing should be mentioned is the Hey Ho, I think, is really called Hey Ho Silver. It’s an early version of Its Just Too Much with different lyrics, as described by Lou Reed before a live version of IJTM.
Nice to talk to you guys about this by the way, i haven’t posted much before, cheers.

Am I missing something? Doesn't Olivier have them in Chicago in February and April 68? If this is a Chicago setlist, one of those dates seems much the likelier for this set. Susan Pile even mentions them playing Booker T in April.
Re: John Cale recorded five '3rd' album songs with VU?
Well it did always seem to me a very strange set list for 1966.
Re: John Cale recorded five '3rd' album songs with VU?
It is true, if John was covering vocals for Lou and everyone else was switching instruments, wouldn't they play the songs they were most familiar with? But still they couldn't have been playing the Columbus setlist all year long, kind of surprised they were still playing a setlist like that by November...
Isn't I'm Not A Young Man Anymore mentioned as being played sometime in '66? With Nico on vocals? Anyone know what show that was connected with?

I think the set list is very strange for 1966. Booker T, Foggy Notion, Story and Hey Mr. Rain. It seems unlikely.
Is it possible that there was another point in the VU history where Reed was unable to play with the rest of the band? I mean given that we assume Reed was not there because the set list is not in his writing.
What is the song 'I Guess Things Happen' ? Could that be Story of My Life?
