Hmm. I'm a bit jealous - that copy has the nicer silver label. But mine is good and was half that price. Not sure if this Lurid* label copy is better than the 'heroin music' white label Uptight version as I haven't found time to A/B them. well spotted - you are correct. I got my copy of Live 68 when it first came out back in 1983 or so. Mail order from Midnight Records in Manhatten, $10 if I remember correctly. Within 2 weeks it got scratched and I just ordered another copy! Different times indeed. When I eventually visited Midnight in 1984, I found that it was just opposite the Hotel Chelsea. I would rip my copy but I have no easy way to connect my turntable to my PC. (and it's just a cheap turntable anyway).

As for lurid - wasn't that the punchline for a joke about Lou's real name being 'Lou Firbank', and him chosing his stage name because it sounded like 'Lurid'?
(And incidentally, in trying to find a reference to that, I was amazed at how many web references there are to Firbank being Lou's real name

The joke was by Lester Bangs, who wrote the replies to Creem's letters section (and, in some cases, the letters themselves). It was a play on the name of Ronald Firbank, a noted author of gay fiction. The first pickup of the false information was in Norm N. Nite's Rock On: An Illustrated History Of Rocknroll; being a reference book, its inclusion there led others to assume it to be correct.The "Lou is Butch Firbank" story was a joke which started in Creem magazine about 1974. Someone wrote in and asked what Lou's real name was and the response was something like "everyone knows that Lou Reed's real name is Louis "Butch" Firbank". It was only ever intended as a joke but it has passed into popular lore as the truth!
