Yes and no. It's nice to know what are generally considered the best and worst sounding releases.

My SHM copies of VU and Another View just turned up, and I've listened to both. I'll recommend Another View 100% - beautiful sound, and finally the second take of 'Mr Rain' gets the remastering job it's always deserved. Even 'Move Right In' - probably previously the least fun to listen to VU song - sounds excellent, like a less manic Run, Run, Run.

VU isn't as much of an upgrade, but still sounds very good.

ETA: One more thing - these issues are modelled as closely as possible on the original vinyl issues, right down to the see through plastic slips that used to hold the vinyl itself. So why isn't the coda at the beginning of Foggy Notion restored?

So today I just compared my Velvet Underground & Nico vinyl ('78 pressing, US Verve black label) with some various CD versions. I was suprised to discover that my vinyl LP seems to have the left & right channels reversed compared to the CDs. Have any of you noticed this anomaly? I'm curious if all the vinyl editions have left & right switched or if I have something unique.

So, for example, on "Venus In Furs" the tambourine is on the LEFT side on the vinyl, and it's on the RIGHT side on the '86 CD, PS&S CD, and the Deluxe Edition stereo CD.

Would somebody mind playing "Venus In Furs" on their vinyl copy and report back to me what side the tambourine is on in their version?

Welcome along, Dr Rock. Sometimes channels are switched on pressings, but it's pretty unusual. Are you sure you haven't got the leads switched on your stereo? That happened to me once, and I went around thinking I had an oddity on vinyl.

I hope that Dr. Robert will be supplied with some more good pressings to rip. Reading the comments, it seems that it isn't that easy to obtain good sounding vinyls, but there's lot of interest so I hope someone will lend the Doc some good copies.

There's a groundswell of interest in LP rips. Over on stooges forum there is an interest in rips of Raw Power. As an example I prefer the rips of the Stooges Sundazed LPs to the CDs that I have. I've ripped my WLWH and various other ancient non-VU LPs ? just for the pleasure of their sound, even though I haven't found the perfect ripping set-up yet. I suspect that Dr. Robert's tube-based phono-stage helps the sound he gets.

CDs are beginning to look like a waste of money to me and yet modern vinyl is by and large cheap crap that uses digital masters on inferior vinyl. Sundazed are brilliant exception who make great sounding LPs that i have heard and bought. Other than that old copies are the way to go if you can find decent copies.
