"Waiting For The Man" wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my list of great New York songs.
For me, Springsteen's "New York City Serenade" takes it in a walk. Especially those 20 minute live versions (like Main Point 2/2/75).
Who honestly thinks WFTM tops "Living For The City"?

I would, Stevies song is wonderful, but WFTM is up there with New York, New York, and is the defining template for punk rock, as well as being a lyrical masterwork of poetic brilliance.
Thats an amazing list, certainly for me the greatest city in the world for music, Miles,Duke,Television,Public Enemy and actually everone on the list, its inspiration central, not much doubt about that.
one small bitch that the Contortions arent on there, but you cant have everything.

I was about to ask 'where's Teenage Jesus and the Jerks?', but then found Lydia Lunch at no. 46. The kind of list of unique greats that only a personal and informed editorial selection could create, I think. I wonder what a similar London list would bring?

Never mind London, what about Manchester?!
But seriously, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Madness and The Pogues would feature prominently in any London list worth its salt. Perhaps Rebel MC? (Definitely no Soul II Soul).

I agree, even as a Londoner, I think your Manchester list would be a lot more impressive than a London list. Who would be on it?
Joy Division, New Order, Smiths, A Certain Ratio, Buzzcocks, The Fall, Magazine, Happy Mondays. (Am I showing my age yet?). Not the Bee Gees or Herman's Hermits. uh..Frank Sidebottom? But already looks a lot better than a London list.
Is this off topic at all?
