Lou Reed Gigography - Research Results (1979)

Post by MJG196 »

Everything in RED is a change/addition to the Rock N Roll Animal website. I know that there are other dates posted to various concert databases, but I have only added information that I found proof for through ads, old newspapers, concert stubs, etc. None of the new info was taken from a generic database like setlist.fm.

If you have any questions/additions/changes, then please let me know here!

I saw Lou at the Bottom Line in AUGUST 1979. Yes, AUGUST 1979.

I have not found this gig either listed or even hinted at ANYWHERE.

BUT...I was there.

It was a one-off that was announced on short notice and he opened with Here Comes The Bride.

Can anyone date this show or provide any information? As I recall, he may have been a bit drunk...

addition: 15 October 1979 - Carré, Amsterdam
proof: announcements and reviews in various Dutch media [details see under]
my summary of reviews: concert received positive reviews, much better than in 1978, pleasantly surprised by only few new songs and many from 'Berlin' [the 1970s classic album], very good encores [except long and boring 'The Bells'], including even a cover of an old Supremes hit

Thanks folks, I added both.

I'm sure Lou had a lot of latitude at the Bottom Line to give short-notice shows! I'll try to dig into it!

I attended this one:

27 March 1979 - Concerthouse, Stockholm, SWE

The venue is called "Konserthuset", which translates to "Concert House".

The concert was OK, not the best I've seen with Lou.

a while ago I downloaded the list of Lou gigs at the Bottom Line from their webpage and that one was not on it. There was one in August 1978.

Lou Reed appearances at the Bottom Line Club, New York (from their web page...)

STARRY EYED and LAUGHING
* Sept 30 and Oct 1 LOU REED joins FLO and EDDIE for some fun.

MAY 09 - 11, 1977
An evening with LOU REED
All seats $6.00

MARCH 10 - 12, 1978
LOU REED
CAMILLE O¹GRADY

MAY 17 - 21, 1978
An Evening With LOU REED
All Seats $7.00

AUG 02 - 03, 1978
GENYA RAVAN
BENNY MARDONES
* LOU REED sits in with GENYA on 8-2.

AUG 06, 1978
An Evening With LOU REED
All seats $7.00

JUNE 03- 06, 1979
An Evening With LOU REED
All Seats $7.50

DEC 24-26, 1979
An Evening With LOU REED
All Seats $6.50

JUNE 01 - 02, 1980

FEB 25-26, 1983
An Evening With LOU REED
All Seats $12.50

FEB 28 – MAR 01 1983

But I am not saying you are wrong. There is a "Bottom Line compilation" tape which is dated May 1978 but obviously has songs on it from other shows. But I didn't know that he was still playing "Bride" in 1979 - there's no other evidence of it being performed after May 1978.

Yes, I know there was that August 1978 appearance. This was a year later!

This one seems to have fallen off the radar. I do remember that it was sold on rather short notice.

Somebody will find it!!

I imagine it was advertised in the Village Voice, but of course, '79 issues of the VV aren't in google's archive.

According to the poster linked to above Lou played a show in München (= Munich) on April 8 at a venue called Circus Krone. There was no venue called Circus Krone in Hamburg in 1979. The venue in Stuttgart is spelled Liederhalle. The name of the actual venue of the Mannheim show is Mozartsaal, which is situated in a complex called Rosengarten, which explains the listing on the poster.
