This is very strange. To me the recording sounds genuine - in fact it sounds just like I'd expect the Upbeat version to. Except to my ears the cheering at the start and end sound the same, and sound very tacked on - as if somebody has taken a demo/rehearsal version of the song and tried to make it sound live by adding cheering. Does any one else hear that? Very strange. IMHO it's a genuine and previously unheard VU recording, but not from Upbeat. Which means I've no idea where it's from!

Could the cheering be added on during broadcast? Like 'canned' laughter was added to comedy shows.

I think that is possible.

Mick puts it very well - this is exactly what I would expect an off-air recording of the Upbeat TV show to sound like. But even if it is not that, it is a previously unheard/unknown (to me anyway) VU recording.
I actually found it by following this link/comment here:

Scott Brown

I think this is pretty definitely the Upbeat version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GU2UNyDoN_M

This was a comment made against another "fake" upbeat titled "Velvet Underground 'Guess I'm Falling In Love' Upbeat TV show 1967". Search for that and you'll see the trail I followed...Scott's is the most recent comment.

Very strange! But what a great version of the song.

Wow. We can only guess what this actually is, but it's definitely VU and it's definitely not something we've heard before.

There are a couple of moments where you can just hear drums, possibly even bass too. The mix strangely gets a lot better during the solo, there's definitely a full band performance in there. Maybe it's some sort of monitor mix, or possibly there was some kind of technical error and this was how it actually went out?

The kids cheering sound odd - they sound like English kids!

At least we know that they performed it on the show and it was taped, by Tony Conrad and maybe also by Jamie Klimek or someone from that scene in Cleveland, as his band Mirrors did a semi-cover retitled Hands In My Pockets in the 70s.
Mirrors sourced their version not from Upbeat! but from Jamie Klimek's live recordings.

Is there a reason those Klimek tapes never circulated?

How very strange. Maybe even more strange is that most of the other videos on the channel are political, pro-Trump videos. The cheering is definitely 'fake', although whether it's faked up by someone now, or was part of an original TV broadcast, is anybody's guess until we get some confirmation.

Some tracks are, but not full shows (see Live '68 LP, Sweet Sister Ray) There's no 'official' reason why the rest has not surfaced but a search on Klimek here will bring up a lot of results/speculation! I tried contacting him myself 20+ years ago via another member of Mirrors, Michael Weldon - from what I remember i was told he was just pissed off with the whole thing and wanted to be left alone. Fair enough.
