The solid body guitar that Sterling is holding in the pic above is the Kent Copa. . I heard mention somewhere about a hand operated device on one of Lou's guitars to make it feed back, I can't remember where I read it, it may be in the Velvet Underground companion. . . . .

i would love to know more about this hand device, or see a nice pic of it. if it's true, then perhaps the kent was used for the solo on "i heard her call my name," and not the country gentleman as I had imagined...

[For one reason or another I couldn't post the images here...]

$350 is a pretty good deal if it is working correctly! Any Sterling guitar connoisseurs here?!

oh! - haven't seen this before!

- that's the Gretsch with the added vox tremolo (repeat percussion) and distortion booster effects and extra pickups! This gets my vote as the I Heard Her Call My Name guitar. It''s mentioned in Uptight. Lou got some free pedals from Vox and had them put into a green Country Gent along with a set of Strat pickups from one of Sterl's gtrs. This is the clearest pic I've seen so far. It was stolen.

looks like Sterling is holding a Gibson SG... that's a pretty deluxe guitar compared to the Kent or Gretsch, for a band that hadn't played a gig yet. Is anything more known about that guitar--was it borrowed for the photo session?

It was Sterl's - I think it's the same one he eventually gave to Maureen, but comparing them now I'm not so sure:

yeah, there's not such a large tailpiece on Sterling's, and the fingerboard inlays look different, and there are some added knobs and other business on Maureen's. But we know from Lou Reed's Gretsch(es?) that they hardly treated the instruments as sacred in their original configuration, and adding a tailpiece is common on SGs. But changing the neck/fingerboard would be quite a job on a Gibson.
