While we're on the topic, there's also "The Days Of Wine And Roses" by the Dream Syndicate for a really good record with a strong VU influence.

I´d go for Sonic Youth. But only because Yo La Tengo´s not listed.

I voted for Sonic Youth--not because they sound most like the SY--but because I think they "best "represent their legacy". If you look at their early stuff and how made the transition from Branca's alloy of contemporary classwical and noise (the guitar orchestra), and think of how the Velvets incorporarted the influence of L. Young (especially with Cale) , you have something like a NY noise tradition. Both bands also have a melodic (but not poppy ) side. One diffference, though is that, in terms of lyric, SY doesn't seem to show a lot of Lou's influence, even in terms of tone...I'm rambling...

I have enjoyed listening to all of the bands on Rosie Lee UK's poll but in my opinion Sonic Youth willingness to experiment, challenge and subvert listeners' expectations is an obvious extention of the Velvet's legacy. That's why they get my vote.

I cast my vote for the Sonic Youth, since I'm more familiar with them because I listen to them more than the other bands, and can hear the sonic reverberations (I tried to make a pun, and failed) echoed from the VU, especially Cale era.

But the Dandy Warhols are a really fun band to listen to.

I just voted for The Jesus and Mary Chain and now I think I should have voted for Sonic Youth. I think Sonic Youth represent a continuation of the VU's experimental side (and are as strong now as they have ever been, I saw them a month ago and was knocked out by the brilliance of their new material). However, to be fair, the JAMC represent the continuation of the VU's best primitive rock instincts - unrelenting minimalism, and the brilliance to forge new musical delights from the simplest of ingredients. So one vote each for me.

As for the Strokes, well, I enjoy them but I think it's probably just my enjoyment of the directly lifted VU that shines through their music. And that's NOT something that Lou, Sterl, Maureen, John and Doug would have done. It's not a criticism, I hope, because I really enjoy both Strokes albums and hope they continue their work!

I dont think there is any doubt that Sonic Youth will be the "winner" here. They have really stayed true to their avant-rock roots. For decades (?!) they have been pushing the envelope with wild ass chords and funked up tunings to create some of the most unique music ever heard.

For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to try 'em out, download the track "Dirty Boots." I dont think there is a better example of Sonic Youth's "pop" aesthetic. It is creative, no-wave, and melodic all at once. Plus, it was a kick ass video!

Quick story: I went to my local used CD-store and asked for "that Sonic Youth song with the boy and girl kissing at a concert." After a few minutes deliberation, the dudes behind the counter yelled back, "Dirty Boots, dude! Killer viideo!!" Ah, at least MTV was good for something!!

Since there are only 204 members here (of which 66 have voted), how do youexpect to get 300 votes in?
