The definitive Velvets recording, Discuss

It rocks mightily for sure. The way that extra minute or so in the middle lets the guitars build up more gradually means it makes more sense than the album version... kinda more organic. And I could be imagining things not having compared the two directly, but offhand I'd say the mix was better too, louder and more Sister Ray-like.
Is the acetate version in fact the definitive version of the first album? The raw, rockin', garagey feel of those original mixes (and the original versions of those three songs) seems more in tune with the spirit of the band as I imagine that it was back then. And European Son as track 1, side 1 - what a statement!!
Indeed, might it be possible that the band's comments (mainly from Sterling I think) about how the mono mix was superior to the stereo because the band spent more time on it, and how Tom Wilson sweetened and softened the original sound with his remix, have in fact been misattributed and in fact refer to the differences between the original Specter mixes and the final album rather than the mono and stereo versions? That would make sense to me.

You're probably 100% correct...

DISCO MYSTIC is the most definitively VU song ever recorded....even though the VU didn't even record it. Lou's magic bag was still overflowing with grand ideas at this time, and he dusted off an old idea to get this gem.
Originally, the VU toyed w/ a version of Disco Mystic, titled "European Disco Dandies," but the tape recorder broke just as Cale was about to hit the first string on his viola. I should know, because i wasn't there.
European Son may be some people's definitive VU recording, but personally, DISCO MYSTIC is far superior...even though the VU never was able to record it.
And remember...it isn't a lie if you believe it. - George Costanza

Disco Mystic,hmmmmmmmm
I like that one, I actually remember hearing it in a glitter ball disco circa 1980. I'm a bit more of a Sally Cant Dance guy myself, I really love that record, its a totally misunderstood sleaze masterpiece in my opinion,I fantasise about Nico singing New York Stars, with Mo's tub thumping drums, would be nice ......
