Seriously. Wasn't this supposed to sell for $40,000? I think whoever jacked it from 50 to 100 was trying to get the price high enough so no one else could afford it.

I wanna be friends with these people. because they apparently have massive amounts of money to blow on an ancient acetate. And I'm giggling at the ebay guarantee that the item's insured for up to $1000.

am I alone in thinking that this is now just beyond credibility? If this acetate sells at the current bid (>$106000) then it would become the world's most expensive record by a long long way. Also look at the latest "bidders" - most bidding for the first time and some with very few "feedbacks"

I just find it very hard to believe that so many different people are ALL willing to bid in excess of $100K for an acetate on which they will have no copyright.

I'll bet the owner of the Matrix tapes would bite your hand off if you offered him $100K for them and at least with them there would be some chance of getting your invetsment back with a commercial release.....

(Or am I missing something here?)

I did notice there is a long stream of bid retractions & cancellations by the sellers. They seem to be cancelling peoples bids even though they have reasonable feedback, I think it may have gone to stupid prices that people just haven't got / pranks etc. If that is the case its a shame but surely this type of item is better off in a Christies / Sotherbys / Cooper Owen type auction.[/list]

We are shocked about the Velvet acetate auction. We are so shocked that we have made up a website where people can donate and help us buying it for sharing its music through internet and donating the item to a museum, probably Andy Warhol's (we're trying to contact them).

I agree. I couldn't understand why they didn't go to Sothebys. Most important pop memorabilia is sold that way, surely? I guess that Sothebys have a higher commission rate. I think that they are inexperienced and that the whole thing could end in tears. Last time they even withdrew the item from auction didn't they?

With regards another posting, I don't think Matrix tapes have quite the same iconic status that this acetate has.

were you aware that this material IS available on bootleg already? There's another copy somewhere (supposedly Maureen Tucker's) and some Japanese bootleggers (Nothing Songs) did a vinyl-transfer and included it as disc 1 on Ultimate Monos and Aceates
