I have an idea on how to maximize his profits. Begin a promotional campaign across the net for the bootleg audio & video catalog of The Velvet Underground. There are many forums where people would love to have this stuff. Particularly in Japan, as Japanese people spend a lot of time on the web; and Japan actually has a tribute CD called 'Sterling Morrison: The Warrior Heart of The Velvet Underground'. That's fandom, for sure. We could also post samples of bootlegs and put them on YouTube channels and start private messaging people. I currently do this with my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/obscure60s
The function of the promotion will work like this. Everyone gets to download the entire audio/video/(photo too, perhaps) catalog of 1960s Velvet Underground, no questions asked. And we will ask for donations. Simple.
So instead of just us on this forum raising money, we're going to be getting as many people from all over the Internet to raise money. All currently officially released recordings will be excluded from this promotional download. And let me emphasize that everyone must get 100% of the collection without paying; and the donation is entirely optional. Otherwise, we'd simply be selling unauthorized copies of The Velvet Underground's music.

It has a rich history, I now know; however 'Melody Laughter' is truncated and faded out by about two minutes. I own a never-played copy of 'Velvet Underground 1966' (LP). I know this for a fact because it was still sealed when I bought it, but I decided to open it as the plastic took away from the richness of the thick, matte paper.
I used a guitar tuner to compare the pitch of the opening feedback to the official release, and Adobe Audition to correct it. Turned out the tracks needed speeding up so they were 95.5% of their original length. Sounds about right to me.

Mark. Great work on contacting the tape owners and thanks for all the historical information you have gleaned from them and shared with the forum. I'd be up for helping with getting access to the original tape. I guess you might have to factor in the cost of getting it transferred on good equipment and by someone with the engineering skills required to set it up correctly for the tape.
Also. thanks for the speed corrected 1966 which I've grabbed. I'll put it on the stereo soon and to get an idea how it feels.
A picture of the original tape would be very nice to see. And a professional fresh transfer would be a good idea. Nobody knows how long these old tapes are going to last.

I know $100 was the max, but I was talking about what you might expect from an auction today. The median price was much lower.
As for the tracks, I think that has very little to do with the value.

It's slightly surprising how cheap it does sell for. I noticed that even the 'black banana' LP has gone for more than 1966. Which is strange because I think 1966 is a much more iconic VU boot (the second VU boot ever made?) and was made with love. The black banana feels like a slightly shoddy reboot of 1966 but maybe it's rarer(?).
btw. I know Olivier's site states 1981, but I've got a feeling that 1966 LP was out before the 80s started.

I agree with iaredatsun slight surprise that the 1966 LP isn't held in higher esteem. Maybe it had a relatively large run so everyone who wanted one was able to buy? In my mind its one of the best VU boot LPs ever produced - well ahead of its time, great music, thick cardboard sleeve and beautiful under stated design - tracking prices over the last 20 years I have noticed this LP having quite a range of prices (and that's nothing to do with condition) i've seen some sell very cheap and at the high end above $100. I would say an average of around ?40/$65 was my guess, maybe that's a little low though?? Maybe the prices are cheaper in the US than UK/Europe, although more difficult to say in these global Ebay days..
