Elektrah Lobel - the lost Velvet

Post by Mark »

This is pretty interesting. Cale mentions in What's Welsh for Zen that he and Lou played gigs in early '65 as The Falling Spikes with a girl called Electra on guitar. He doesn't go into much detail, except to say that they realised it wasn't going to work when they noticed that Electra was prone to playing with great intensity, oblivious to the fact that her fingers were bleeding. Anyway, Richie Unterberger reveals here that her name was actually Elektrah Lobel and he's found a photo of her that will be in his book. A bit of googling reveals that she was also known as Elecktrah or Electrah, and she appeared in a couple of Warhol movies around Spring 1965: The Life of Juanita Castro and Kitchen. Here's a still from Kitchen:

Nobody ever tried to find out where she is these days?

Elektrah Lobel is Marcia Corbett. She just died of cancer
about May, 2016. I knew her well. I even played in a band with her. It was a Messianic Jewish worship band. She was passionate and kind! A great lady. I went to her memorial service in Bellmore, NY.

So sad to hear this, but fascinating to hear what became of her after all these years. Did Marcia ever talk of her distant past with Warhol and the early Velvet?

This is the place where she lay her head when she went to bed at night....

I think you can see more of a resemblance to the '60s picture in this second shot.

amazing! Just when you think there can't be any more Velvets minutiae out there, this forum (And more often than not, Phil) shares it with the rest of us who really do care. So sad that we couldn't have found her earlier so we could get her feelings and memories on tape or at least on paper. But hey, I will take anything I can get. Kudos

Does anyone know anything about this blogger? She(?) says she interviewed Elektrah/Marcia in 2011/2012:
Interviewed by the author in 2011 and 2012, Lobel (who now uses her given first name Marcia, having picked up the nickname Elektrah at a party on San Francisco’s Haight Street) didn’t remember much about her brief stint with Lou and John, but did want to clarify her role in the pre-Velvets. “When I was with them, I never played any instruments,” she emphasizes, denying the anecdotes Cale recounted as her playing a guitar with bleeding fingers: “I was a singer. This thing about me breaking a guitar or something, that was not me!”
