The main clues were the large glass windows behind John & Lou that look like a 1950/60s building possibly a bank or office. Behind them is an older block which comes out into the pavement. Between the glass building and the back building there is a road but it isn't a major junction / that wide and this also helped secure the location. The key though was the distinct building in the background and that's what I looked for first. A bit of Photoshop to check and the back building seems to fit exactly, not surprisingly there's a different business operating there but the size of the company advertising sign is the same and the stone mouldings match the 1968 photo. The glass fronted building hasn't changed much at all in 45 years, the black strip at the bottom of the buildings still can be seen, the stone mouldings and the window frame sizes match the 68 scene. The glass building is now listed as the 'Israel Discount Bank of New York'. I was quite surprised how little has changed in this scene considering this was 45 years ago.
Lou & John are walking south down 5th Ave they are about to approach W 42nd St on their right then pass the NY Public Library on their right. The address is 511, 5th Ave, New York, NY 10017 (Midtown Manhattan) excuse me if that's not the exact correct format. Anyone want to work out where in relation to their trip to Tom Wilson this was?

? Joel Meyerowitz 1968
This is the wide view of the location which is on the left hand side of 5th Ave (looking North)
