That was a really interesting take, I quite like it.
me too! I've been trying for years to find out who it is. IIRC I got it a long time ago on a cassette along with one of Lou's 1990s appearances on Vin Scelsa's Idiots Delight show, but it wasn't obvious whether it was part of Lou's appearance or not. That might be Vin speaking at the start....

I dug out the original cassette I got and see that it actually seems to credit "Bill Randall". There is a Canadian musician by that name but I don't know if it's the same guy.

If we're still talking about the "country and western-style" version of "I Heard Her Call My Name," it is the result of a song-poem recording I had made back in late '90s or so. Instead of submitting my own lyric, I submitted Lou's – the company then set a melody to it, and made a recording of the resulting song. The simple point of the project was to see what that great lyric might sound like separated from its equally brilliant musical setting.

Broadway, the company that made the recording, was located in Florida, but was a direct descendant of the venerable Tin Pan Alley song-poem company of New York. I don't know where the name "Bill Randall" came from, as the only original copy was on a cassette, which didn't indicate any name at all for the artist.

I can't remember how I distributed the recording -- whether I'd put it on the song-poem website, or gotten it around in some other way -- but I'm very pleased that it's being enjoyed by the VU fanbase. The track is documented on this page of my song-poem website:

Phil, this is why you are a legend.
Here I was trying to find who this Bill Randall was who had made this endearingly fresh / outsider C&W version take on IHHCMN.
Well done.
