Yep, one of the greats but which version? The VU/Live 1969 versions are very different from the Fully Loaded one...

The 1970 version has that great lead guitar line that the '69 version lacks but this song needs Moe on drums to really scale the heights. Funny how Lou reverted back to the '69 arrangement for his debut solo album (with the lead guitar line from the '70 version). Still, it's nowhere near the one on the VU album for me.
In my opinion, almost everything on Live 1969 is its best version, at least as far as official release go.

Interestingly, when I was in high school in the 70s (Catholic school no less, jacket & tie), I found another student who dug Lou Reed. We had a little lyrics-quoting conversation, and both knew "Heroin" from Rock n Roll Animal. We never became close friends or anything, but I was surprised to find one other Reed-pervert in that domain of metal heads, Dead-heads & Springsteen die-hards.

I had a copy of Loaded back then, but its pleasures were a little subtle for me at the time, so I didn't procure more VU 'till I was college age. Was heavily into Jimi, Patti, Pistols, Ramones & The Pink Floyd. Would've loved White Light/White Heat had I heard it.

I guess this is an inactive topic, but I'll post anyways...

I Heard Her Call My Name,
I found it suprising I didn't see this chosen, this song really sounds like sadism on a guitar. Lou is just violating the guitar, in a good way.

Runner up:
Black Angels Death Song, this is the song that turned me on to VU (album version).

But of course, all the VU songs are excellent.

It seems to change for me, but I'll go with 'Venus In Furs' for the moment. I love the lyrics.
